EXPERIENCE OF EMOTIONAL REGULATION IN DRAMA THERAPY AMONG ADULTS WITH MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS DUE TO PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCE USE Research Aim: To investigate the emotional regulation experience of adults with mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use in drama therapy. Participants: 8 adults with mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use attending a psychiatric day care center. Methodology: The study was conducted in October - November 2025. After 6 weeks of drama therapy sessions in a day care center (sessions were held 2 times a week), a semi-structured interview was conducted about the experience of emotional regulation in drama therapy sessions. After collecting the interviews, a thematic analysis was conducted. Thematic analysis helped to reveal the subjective experiences of the participants gained during the sessions. Conclusion: The thematic analysis of the qualitative study of the drama therapy program showed that the possibilities of applying drama therapy to adults with mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances can help patients with this disorder to recognize their emotional reactions, manage them and regulate them. It is worth noting that the experience of emotional regulation had a different effect on the cognition and regulation of patients’ emotions. Some of the patients participating in the study discovered a strategy or method of emotional regulation that suited them personally. It is recommended to include other psychosocial rehabilitation and addiction specialists in the drama therapy program process in order to provide patients with more information about the impact of drama therapy on addiction and the contribution of drama therapy to the more general process of recovery from addiction. |
