This MA thesis includes the investigation into the concept of self-isolation and a series of five paintings entiteled Self-isolation. The main goal of the thesis is to theoretically research the phenomenon of self-isolation and thereby lay the background for an adequate and compeling artistic representation of the phenomenon in the works of painting. In order to achieve this goal, the following objectives have been raised in this work: to summarize the main causes leading to self-isolation how they are discussed in the academic literature; to find the examples of self-isolation among the well-known artists; to conduct several interviews (qualitative research) researching personal views on self-isolation among the people of different specializations; to conduct an analysis of the thematic analogues in the works of other artists; to critically assess my own earlier paintings on the topic; to paint a series of paintings on the topic of self-isolation. |
