Abstract [eng] The Concept of Political in Lithuanian Art Discourse Master thesis The Concept of Political in Lithuanian Art Discourse aims to take a closer look at Lithuanian Art Discourse as a platform for expressing political meanings and arguments. As the postmodern idea that art should not be independent of politics is becoming more and more popular among social academics, a closer look how the Concept of Political is being expressed in the Lithuanian Art Field is needed. Considering the fact that the linguistics of the Lithuanian Art Field is broadening its political vocabulary, there is no wonder that the relationship between art and politics in Lithuania is becoming stronger. However, social and political scientists in Lithuania are still reluctant to show more interest in the Art Discourse as a place for political communication. This paper seeks to prove how and why the Concept of Political is being represented as well as constructed in the Lithuanian Art Discourse. One of the main ideas behind this master thesis is that the political arguments, political meanings and political content that are represented and constructed within the Lithuanian Art Discourse are meaningful in the political Discourse and the articuliation of politics in Lithuania. What is more, artistic practices could be understood as playing a role in the constitution and maintenance of a given symbolic order of the Lithuanian Art Field or in its challenging. The framing of the analysis is designed to emphasize and outline the specificity and internal logics of Lithuanian Art Field. Master thesis the Concept of Political in Lithuanian Art Discourse is divided into three major parts. In the first one, the relationship between art and politics as well as interdiscourse relationship are explored. In the second part of the thesis, an analytic model and the conceptions of political and discourse in the Lithuanian case are designed for aggregating and analyzing qualitative data of the main magazines and newspapers of Lithuanian Art Field. The discourse analysis is developed by Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau theoretical framework. The model of analysis seeks to look at the main political topics in Lithuanian Art discourse as well as identify the reasons why particular topics are political. The third part is dedicated to Lithuanian case analysis. The main political topics in the Lithuanian Art Discourse can be described as: the Politics of Culture in Lithuania, the culture and arts funding in Lithuania, the idea of gender in the Lithuanian Art Field, the concept of Public Spaces and Historical Memory in Lithuania, the understanding of the function of art and the relationship between traditional art shapes and new media, the concept of political within an artwork. The centre of attention was devoted not only to the political topics of the Art Discourse, but also to the configuration of political meanings which are contributing to questioning the dominant structure of the Lithuanian Art Field. All in all, this paper looks deeper into the dynamics of political rhetoric in the Lithuanian Art Discourse and reveals how and why the Concept of Political is expressed in the Lithuanian Art Discourse.
