Abstract [eng] According to Lithuania’s constitution family is the background of the state and the society. The necessity to offer social security is determined by demographic aging and decrease of the fertility rate. It is obvious that state measures such as social benefits, allowances or other public support as well as economic conditions have major influence on the growth of the fertility rates. The aim of the thesis is to analyse the most problematic social security aspects of families with children in Lithuania because of the prevalence of the family social security legislations. First of all, the problems of legal definition of the family are discussed in the paper as well as the importance of them in the context of social security. Secondly, the study provides the review of guaranteed social security of employed people during their pregnancy, pregnancy&childbirth, maternity/paternity or child care leaves, reveals the most problematic aspects of it and examines the adequacy to the international European Union legislations. Furthermore, a lot of attention is paid to analyse indigent and socially risky families. What is more, advantages and disadvantages of social security prevalence for indigent families are examined in the thesis as well as the state measures which promotes integration of unemployed families into a labour market. Finally, the thesis come to an end with some recommendations and conclusions.
