Abstract [eng] The paper analyzes possibilities of playing the lead and rhythm guitar in various musical styles at schools of education complementary to formal education, as a relevant problem in the context of current situation in these institutions, when guitar educators often limit themselves to presenting one or two musical styles (which they know better) or basics, thus narrowing a student’s potential to play this instrument. The relevance of the research is also highlighted by the fact that the guitar has evolved into several types – classical, acoustic, electric and bass. It can be stated that different types of guitars distinctively reflect the styles of the music performed, requiring the use of a variety of methods. The goal of the research is to reveal methodological possibilities of playing the lead and rhythm guitars in different styles. The following objectives were set to achieve the goal: 1) to discuss the development of different types of guitar, differences in structure, key features of playing; 2) to describe and compare the possibilities of playing the lead and rhythm guitar in different musical styles; 3) to investigate teachers’ attitudes to playing and teaching to play the guitar in different styles. On the basis of the theoretical part, a structured qualitative research was prepared. In order to obtain a qualitative understanding of the features of performing and pedagogical practice of guitarists and guitar teachers from the stylistic point of view, a structured survey questionnaire was developed. The respondents were guitar educators from Šiauliai, Rietavas, Šilalė and Vilnius, working in schools of education complementary to formal education. The results of the questionnaire survey show that the majority of teachers teach to play classical and popular music. During the analysis, it was also reflected that all teachers faced a lack of student’s motivation to play. Some of the teachers’ statements that educators start to offer to the students pieces of music of different styles when a student has no motivation to play have been highlighted. It can be stated that a guitar teacher should familiarize students with different styles of music and different types of guitars.
