The possibilities of sustainable development of the region in the case of Akmenė district are analyzed in the Master’s thesis. The final work consists of three parts (theoretical, methodological and empirical), conclusions, recommendations, and references. The first part examines the theoretical discourse of sustainable development, defining the dimensions and their potential, which are important at the regional level and distinguishes the measures applied to promote the development of sustainable development dimensions, and explains evaluation indicators of sustainable development and their applicability in the region. As well as the conceptualization of the regional development’s definition and features is given, as well as the abstract of the theoretical model of region’s sustainable development. In the second part of the master’s thesis, based on methodological provisions, other issues are presented: research strategy, problem field analysis, logical work scheme, research stages. The methods used and their usage in the research are also presented: document analysis, statistical data analysis, SWOT, theoretical modelling methods. The third part of the master’s thesis is based on the document analysis of international, state, regional and municipal documents. It reveals priorities of sustainable development, which should be guiding Akmenė district according to three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. Based on the document analysis and the analysis of statistical data gained the Statistics Lithuania, the three dimensional analysis of the situation in Akmenė district was performed. Based on analyzes of documents and statistical data, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of sustainable development’s dimensions in Akmenė district were formulated. According to results of performed analyzes, the theoretical model was checked in Akmenė district and the (non-)functioning parts of the model were clarified. At the same time, the application of measures promoting the development of sustainable development’s dimensions in Akmenė district was inspected. After summarizing the results of the study, conclusions and recommendations were presented. It was founded is that only a well-managed process of preparation, adoption, implementation of the region's sustainable development decisions and seized opportunities can strengthen and ensure the region's sustainable development. The second important conclusion is the identification of the most important strengths of Akmenė district as a region for sustainable development, which are closely related to the region's sustainable development opportunities. Therefore, it is recommended that the Akmenė district municipality administration include in the strategic action plan (situation overview) all indicators reflecting the sustainable development of the region in terms of economic, social and environmental progress. Indicators would help to focus more easily on the problems and opportunities of Akmenė district by preparing activity reports, strategic plans, visions and missions. Indicators would help to assess the objectives of the envisaged strategic action plan and to exploit the untapped opportunities for improving sustainable development. Based on the results of the research, the opportunities for the improvement of the sustainable development in Akmenė district were formulated, focusing on economic, social and environmental development. |
