Abstract [eng] Peter Altenberg's contemporaries have associated him with a genre causing quite a lot of problems to the modern researchers in terms of definition, metaphors, and in determination of its limits. The article deals with "Coffee house literature", with its meaning and with Altenberg's relation to this relative 'genre' which is often mistakenly described by emphasising the first segment of the concept as the place where literature of the aforementioned type was born. Within discussion of the features of "Coffee house literature" (relation to the audience, wittiness and jocular character, journalistic influence, trends in genre hybridization, and declaration of attitudes thematically contradicting burghers' morality as well as depiction of often trite scenes from the life of Vienna and Viennese), we must raise the issue, if all Altenberg's works met this connotation without exception. The analysis revealed that works from the early period, i.e. impressionistic miniature, could be least attributable to this category. Although the origin thereof was determined by the coffee house culture, they deliberately got rid of "journalistic" genres turning the world being watched into an "extract of entity", poetry. [...].
