Abstract [eng] General sports teacher’s competences cover the same roles that are essential to teach the subject and also professional roles as for a teacher of any other subject. Questionnaires have been provided to 50 sports teachers to fill in, and analysis of the answers has been carried out to determine general competences sports teachers needed for their professional practice. It has been defined that all sports teachers acclaimed the necessity of knowledge on child’s and teenager’s psychology. Preferences were given to good understanding of goals set and sport management, as well as good knowledge of pedagogy. Having evaluated their competences the surveyed emphasised the importance of practical implementation of theoretical knowledge in their everyday work. General competences for sports teachers were defined as follow: creation and implementation of a project, application of innovations, the ability to work independently and the ability to make decisions, negotiation skills, computer skills, problem solving skills, analytical and planning skills, the ability to work in a team, generalisation skills. The respondents involved in the research listed personal characteristics of a sports teacher in the following order: quick reaction in unexpected situations, possible influence on students, coping with stress, care and attention, awareness of a problem, good communication skills, good management skills.
