Abstract [eng] |
This article deals with a problem of discrimination in Lithuanian cafés. The source of research is complaints submitted to the Equal Opportunities Ombudsman Institution of Lithuania in the period of the year 2005–2011. The task of the research is to review antidiscrimination law, provide discrimination examples in cafés, analyze statistics of discrimination, and present the results of complaints investigations. Summarizing the article one can state that Vilnius and Kaunas together combine three quarters of all complaints in Lithuania. The greatest number of complaints is related to discriminatory advertising problems, entrance fees, work order and job ads. Significantly fewer complaints have been submitted regarding harassment and sexual harassment. Men submitted more complaints regarding discriminatory advertising, while women more often were the object of violation in advertising. The fact of discrimination was recognized in almost 50 per cent of all cases. Recently the text of advertising was a subject for investigation. Violation became more subtle, number of obvious rude discrimination cases has been reduced, cafés more often invoke services of lawyers to settle down problems concerning potential discrimination. New tendency – consultations on possible problems concerning advertising, texts of job ads and others associated with operation of cafés. |
