Abstract [eng] In this article, the concept of self-education from the point of view of the education science has been based according to the descriptive analysis of the scientific sources and reflection by the author. The topic of this research is proposed by these problem questions: what is the etymology of the concept of self-education? What characteristics of the different self-education concept are distinguished? How does integrity of self-education and education assert? The aim of the research is to reason the concept of self-education on the attitude of the education science. The definition of the concept of self-education from the attitude of the education science is aggravated by the ambiguous understanding of this process. In the terminology of Lithuanian education science, there are given synonymous terms such as education and self-creation which express the conception of self-education and there are also used other expressions which name separate components of the self-education content or define the self-education phenomenon in various aspects. According to this point of view, the first part of the word self-education indicates an active role of the activity performer and it is related to personal features and forms of the spiritual life such as: self-reliance, self-expression, self-effectiveness, self-activity, self-regulation. The other semantic structural part (education) of the term self-education derives from a German term Bildung which means the process (to educate) and also the state (to be educated). If the second meaning of the term Bildung is related to a clearly defined education ideal which is aimed at in the education process, the first definition is more suitable to define a modern, dynamic and holistic education conception which is related to the human’s lifelong education process.
