Creative works by one of the most outstanding Russian realists of the 19th century, ivan Goncharov (1812-1891), are peculiar by the usual attention to a body, its experiences and senses in the living world. Literary works of the writer usually emphasise the interaction of body with social and cultural layer of a particular space of the living world as well as the impact of socio–cultural fields surrounding a body on its activities and formation. Presence and activities of a body in various spaces, in the act of implementation and development of individual's existential project always leave a significant inscription because the permanently proceeding formation of a body as a socio–cultural formation in spaces of the living world coincides with the history of individual's becoming. In works by Goncharov, an individual acts in the world where the tension and fight between two socio–cultural poles are observed; these poles are expressed through the opposition of apathy and action, sleep and active involvement, wasteland and change. The road of the main character always stretches from one condition (usually, wasteland) dominating one's living environment to another. During this travel, various processes for formation and transformation of the body proceed; they indirectly participate in the history of becoming of the individual, the process of creation of one's social identity. |
