Abstract [eng] Jonas Šliūpas (1861–1944) is the developer of the first solid history of Lithuanian literature, the author of the study Lithuanian Works and their Writers, Literary Review Prepared by a Lithuanian Lover (1890, Tilžė) (written in the USA). Šliūpas also wrote about 30 articles on Lithuanian literary works and over 20 reviews on Lithuanian books. The aim of the paper is to highlight Jonas Šliūpas‘ literature research reflections and his Lithuanian Works and their Writers in particular within the humanitarian discourse of the second half of the 20th century – the beginning of the 21st century, to review and identify how Jonas Šliūpas, a literature historian and critic, evaluated the aesthetic aspects of Lithuanian literary works. The methods of cultural descriptivism, analysis of theoretical and critical literature and interpretation following the approach of the cultural- historical school are used in the paper. The study is relevant because oftentimes (except a few cases) Jonas Šliūpas‘ aesthetic views on literary texts have been disregarded, have received too little or only sketchy consideration. The paper deals with the above issues in Jonas Šliūpas‘ Lithuanian Works and their Writers and other critical works. The following conclusions have been drawn: especially when highlighting the social value of a work Jonas Šliūpas addressed the aesthetic side of Lithuanian literature although he neither put any special emphasis on that nor wrote any particular study on the subject. (For Jonas Šliūpas, who had no special education in literature and was non-professional, as for many Lithuanian intellectuals of that time, it was a call of duty). [...].
