Abstract [eng] Problem- based learning is an educational innovation recently receiving much attention from higher education theorists and practitioners in various countries. Theoretically formulated and analytically substantiated features and principles of problem- based learning often get significantly corrected by empirical application in a particular educational institution. When starting implementing problem- based learning, an institution of higher education (Šiauliai University as well) faces the diversity of approaches determining the possibilities for flexible adjustment of problem- based learning for the context in which it is being applied; however, at the same time, it raises some doubts regarding necessity and suitability of certain didactic decisions. The article discusses major features of problem- based learning and their variations. When starting applying problem- based learning, it is important to be able not only to model the educational process itself, but also to foresee possible results. In theoretical discussion of scientists and practical experience of institutions, the revealed positive results of problem- based learning provide motivation for both lecturers attempting to adapt the educational innovation and students who start learning according to it. The links between features of problem- based learning and competences being developed revealed in the article generalise theoretical insights and practical experience, in addition, they serve as a starting point for a creative way of lecturers and students in implementation and improvement of problem- based learning in their institution of higher education. Systemic application of essential features of problem- based learning leads to achievements of students, which supplement and deepen competences gained during traditional studies. [...].
