Abstract [eng] In this article the main theories of foreign direct investment are discussed identifying their basic presumptions, shortcomings and merits, principal representatives. These theories of foreign direct investment are singled out: differential rates of return, portfolio diversification, seeking of bigger market, usage of monopolistic advantages of investor, internalization theory, eclectic approach, the theory of product cycle, oligopolistic reaction. It is settled that empirical background of investment theory is complicated due to difficulties of expected profit measure. Market investigations connected with this theory reveals that different taxation of labour and labour market regulation determine differing net profit. The theory of portfolio diversification helps explain that capital moves both from the country and to the country, but it does not give explanation why in some countries concerning economic activities the concentration of foreign direct investment is higher than in others.
