Abstract [eng] One of the main features of contemporary life style is consumption related with prosperity of new public spaces: the rhythm of everyday life is being dictated by shopping centres and entertainment industry. New phenomena and socio-cultural notions become established in the field of literary creation: productivity, power, strategies, interests, demand, offer, profit, efficiency. Prosperity of the popular literature is a market product, too. The article deals with new spaces of narration in contemporary prose disclosing the values of modern society through the picture of the major heroine of the literary work. The object of the analysis is the novel Anarchistės išpažintis (The Confession of a Woman- Anarchist) by a Lithuanian writer Dalia Jazukevičiūtė and the novella Belytis (Sexless) by a Polish writer Dorota Terakowska. The heroine Katarina N. in Jazukevičiūtė’s novel is a consumer. Sorting of items used by her designates not only the public and private areas, but also those of material and spiritual interests in the plot. In the context of public relations, an important place is allocated for a shopping centre, a café, an inn, a shop. The signs of woman’s rebirth are withdrawal from a public / open space to a private / closed space of home and creation. The way of self-cognition is the most important for the major heroine Eva in Dorota Terakowska’s novella. Through a changing relation to the supermarket, maturity of the major heroine is being revealed. In the book, Wawel Palace, classical music that the father is listening to, supermarket offers are like values of different periods which do not collide in the societal life. A human life also becomes of a doubtful value. A changed world, people’s life style become the theme, plot and characters of contemporary literature. Dalia Jazukevičiūtė’s and Dorota Terakowska’s books are the way of speaking the popular literature does on the state of the present-day society.
