Abstract [eng] The article discusses the concept of a letter and analyses how the features of monologue and dialogue are reflected in the letter. It is revealed that different researchers treat the letter differently. In most cases it is treated as a monologue form of linguistic expression, though sometimes it is described as a dialogue. On the grounds of the analysis of the letters, a conclusion may be drawn that the letter in its nature is a monologue text, but its content and the linguistic expression are closer to the dialogue. The latter is revealed by the following features: 1) it always has a particular addressee, i. e. it cannot be considered as a form of speaking with oneself; 2) the text of the letter is always oriented not only towards the addressee as a person but also to the addressee’s text: either as a response to the previous letter of the addressee or as a replication which provokes the response of the addressee; 3) the text of the letter always contains the means of linguistic expression which are oriented towards the addressee (addresses, parting words, various pronominal constructions used for the identification of the addressee, the usage of second- person pronouns or verb forms indicating them and etc.).
