Abstract [eng] The article analyses motivation as a social, cultural and educational phenomenon, discloses its importance for the individual’s self-expression, generalises scientific researches into sport motivation, highlights motives and goals that determine sporting expression, internal and external factors which influence motivation for sporting practice and for the choice of university studies of physical education. Qualitative study was employed to find out the types of the goals of the students’ sporting activity and of resolve motives, duration and directiveness of the sporting activity, and the motives which influence the choice of the branch of sport and of physical education studies. The question given for students’ reflection, “Why do I go in for sports and why did I choose to study physical education?” disclosed that the sporting activity as a factor of (self-)education is influenced by both internal and external motives, which influence the personality’s versatile development, presuppose duration and directiveness of the sporting activity starting with the choice of the sporting activity and the endeavour of the goals and finishing with the choice of studies related to physical education and sport and the endeavour of professional career.
