The foreign policy of the First Lithuanian Republic is divided in Lithuanian historiography into two major periods. The first period lasted from the re-establishment of the Lithuanian state to the coup of December 17, 1926; the second - from that date until the Soviet occupation in 1940.During the latter of the two periods the Lithuanian - Polish relations were heavily influenced by the authoritarian rulers of the two countries: Jozef Pilsudski and Antanas Smetona.
