Abstract [eng] Theoretical conception of social skills, areas of expression, and structural components are discussed in the article. With reference to theoretical analysis and data of the carried out research, the structure of social skills model of children with moderate mental retardation is being studied as well as differences of the expression of social skills. The particularities of structure and expression of social skills of these children that are compared to the theoretical entirety of essential social abilities (components of social skills) are presented. Scope of research. Criteria of the sample of research participants: moderate mental retardation, average school age. 509 children with moderate mental retardation (296 boys, 213 girls), aged 13–17, attending developmental classes, took part in the research. 214 special educators presented the data about research participants. Their survey was conducted in 25 special, 5 mainstream and 7 secondary schools (total of 37) of Lithuania’s cities and towns. It was found that skills such as emotional contact, self-knowledge, and self-regulation dominate the structure of social skills model of children with moderate mental retardation.
