Abstract [eng] The rules and regulations concerning protection zones of water bodies in Lithuania do not allow to fell trees and shrubs, to graze animals, to set up recreation grounds or to make a fire within the protection zone. The result of impact of these laws and regulations, together with naturally dwindling enterprise and activity of rural population and decreasing numbers of tourists and holiday-makers is compact overgrowth of bank protection zones with deciduous trees, shrubs and bushes. This leads to spread of dense macrofites in the litoral zones of water bodies. Spread of such compact overgrowth adds to contamination of water bodies with biogenic elements, intensifies their eutrofication, decreases biological variety, spoils the landscape, obstructs the view. Dense overgrowth and windfallen trees make riverbanks and lakeshores impenetrable, beaches gradually disappear, silt appears on sandy beds of shalow waters, shores and banks turn to marshes. It is necessary to change the law concerning protection zones of water bodies as soon as possible and to encourage local communities and holidaymakers to remove unwanted overgrowth thus diminishing areas covered with macrofites.
