The dissertation deals with morphosyntactic and semantic properties of resultative secondary predication (RSP) in European languages. It aims to establish formal encoding means for resultative secondary predicates and to reveal the semantic features which determine the different encoding of resultatives in a language and across languages. The language sample of the dissertation includes 31 languages. The dissertation discusses theoretical approaches to RSP and their contribution to the conception of the work. It defines causation and telicity as the basic features of RSP the presence of which determine the prototypical status of a construction. Five formal encoding strategies for RSP are distinguished in the dissertation: adjective, adverb, prepositional phrase, compound verb and noun phrase. It is assumed that the encoding of RSP is determined by a number of semantic factors such as lexical aspect, the nature of the property predicated by a verb, subcategorization of an object, etc. According to semantic and morphosyntactic features seven types of resultatives, or functions, are distinguished and arranged in a semantic map. The dissertation proposes an implicational hierarchy which represents a verb‘s ability to take a resultative secondary predicate. |
